We know that people are feeling hurt, angry and disappointed following the pause to scheduled and new referrals for gender-affirming surgeries at the Welsh Gender Service, the specialist NHS adult gender clinic in Wales.  

This decision creates uncertainty and worry for people affected, their families and those supporting them. We are deeply concerned at the suddenness of the decision for those already assessed and awaiting procedures, and that further delays will have a detrimental impact on people’s mental health.

We hope the review is treated as a matter of urgency and concluded quickly so that trans people and their families do not experience more distress, grief and trauma. 

We want to restate our unequivocal solidarity with our trans friends, colleagues and wider community. You have our continued support, and you have the right to be treated with dignity and respect.

The decision does not shut down the Welsh Gender Service with hormone therapy support, endocrine care, psychological services, and speech and language therapy continuing.
